Thai Medical and Nursing Students: COVID-19 Fear Associated with Mental Health and Substance Use

COVID-19 impact on student fear, mental health, and substance use (Isralowitz et al., 2021; Pavlenko et al., 2021), A survey was conducted of Chiang Mai University medical and nursing students in June 2021. The country, like many others, is in a crisis addressing a third wave of COVID-19 infection including the delta variant. Thailand, the second country to detect the COVID-19 infection, has been fighting the epidemic since January 2020. After the first seven months of the pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported the country evidenced strong “public health interventions, community engagements, and effective governance which in turn
limited community-based transmission of COVID-19” (World Health Organization, 2020). However, high infection and low vaccination rates have been observed since April 2021, As of mid-July 2021 only about 5% of the Thai population is vaccinated, there are about 15,000 daily reported infections, deaths have reached record highs, and hospitals are reaching capacity with health professionals overwhelmed (Our World in Data, 2021).
